Eligibility Criteria & Top Exams for Admission to NIRF Ranked NITs

If you are aspiring to secure admission to the NIT colleges in India, you must meet certain eligibility criteria and qualify in specific entrance exams depending on the course level: undergraduate or postgraduate. The eligibility requirements and popular entrance exams accepted for providing admission to various academic programmes offered by NITs have been provided below.

B.Tech. Eligibility Requirements

  • For providing admission to B.Tech Programmes, your All India Rank (AIR) in JEE Main will be taken into consideration.
  • If you belong to the General category, you must secure at least 75% marks in Class 12 or be in the top 20 percentile.
  • You become eligible for a 5% relaxation in the minimum required marks if you belong to the SC/ST category, which implies, you must obtain at least 65%.
  • Admission will be based on merit and seats will be allocated through JoSAA counselling depending on JEE Main ranks and availability of seats in preferred institutes.

M.Tech. Eligibility Requirements

  • A valid GATE score stands as mandatory.
  • CCMT (Centralized Counseling for M.Tech/ M.Arch/ M.Plan/ M.Des) oversees the seat allocation.
  • If you have completed Class 12 from the state where the NIT is located, 50% of the seats will be reserved for you under State Quota.
  • If you belong to other states, you will be allotted the remaining 50% of seats based on AIR.

Apart from traditional engineering programmes such as BTech and MTech, NITs also offer dual degree programmes in various fields over a duration of 5 years. Three NITs like  NIT Trichy, NIT Allahabad and NIT Rourkela also conduct MBA or BBA programmes. The most sought after undergraduate programmes offered at these institutes include:

  • Bachelor of Technology (BTech)
  • Bachelor of Science (BS)
  • Dual Degree (BTech-MTech) over 5 years
  • Dual Degree (BS & MS) over 5 years
  • Bachelor of Architecture (BArch)

Under Postgraduate programmes, the following programmes are offered:

  • Master of Science (MSc)
  • Master of Technology (MTech)
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)

Once again, it has been demonstrated by the NIRF rankings that rankings are determined by how well institutions perform under particular parameters, and having the "IIT-tag" solely does not ensure a top position. The rankings have been provided to the top NIT colleges primarily based on 5 parameters: Teaching, Learning & Resources (30%), Research & Professional Practice (30%), Graduation Outcomes (20%), Outreach & Inclusivity (10%), and Perception (10%).
